Sublime Landscapes Heade Newburyport Meadows Large Lacquer Tray
This large lacquer tray features a detail from Newburyport Meadows (ca. 1876–81), a dramatic vista painted by Martin Johnson Heade. Though he maintained a New York City studio in a building also occupied by several members of the Hudson River School—the first true American artistic fraternity, made up of New York–based landscape painters—Heade never formally aligned himself with the movement.
