Coins have long been used across the Islamic world to create spectacular adornments. In honor of this ancient practice, our inspired necklace references a small ornament (late 19th–early 20th century) attributed to probably Tunisia or Turkey. The original features decorative silver coins stamped in emulation of 18th-century Ottoman currency; specifically, coinage used in the year 1797 (A.H. 1203 according to the Islamic calendar) during the reign of Sultan Selim III. The coins in the Museum's piece were likely copied from discontinued currency available in Tunisia during and after Ottoman presence in North Africa. The pin element on the original suggests that it would have been worn fastened to a garment or cloth headdress.
