Description

Our attractive openwork lamps feature beautiful decorative ornamentation derived from an Indian window screen, or jali, in The Met collection. Pierced screens were used extensively in Indian architecture as windows, room dividers, and railings. Dating to the second half of the 16th century, this screen is attributed to the reign of the Mughal emperor Akbar (r. 1550–1605), during which red sandstone was the favored building material.
