This stoneware bowl references a late 12th-century French column shaft and capital at The Met Cloisters. They stand in the Museum's serene Saint-Guilhem Cloister, which was reconstructed with over 140 fragments from the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert in southern France. The exquisite limestone carvings of narrative scenes and intricate plant motifs come from the now-destroyed upper story of the abbey's cloister.
