Malaika Linens Embroidered Scrolling Vines Motif Pillow
Our linen pillowcase features a hand-embroidered motif inspired by the intricate detailing on a spherical bead (11th century) in The Met collection. Made in Egypt or Syria, the bead boasts exquisite patterns of scrolling vines, recalling those of the 9th-century beveled style, although these possess clearer lines, perhaps owing to the medium.
Wielding an ethos of women's empowerment through craft, Malaika founders Margarita Andrade and Goya Gallagher see the potential for more than just luxury linens in Egyptian cotton. In 2018, the Ecuador-born, Egypt-based design duo established a self-funded school that teaches underprivileged Egyptian women and refugees how to sew. Once a proficient skill level is achieved, each craftswoman returns home to make space for new students and enjoy financial independence—without upending social or familial traditions—by realizing Malaika's sumptuous fabric designs.
This item was created for the Heirloom Project, led by designer Madeline Weinrib. The initiative celebrates the 10th anniversary of The Met's reimagined Islamic Wing by seeking engagement with global artisans who pursue historic techniques and design principles. The Heirloom Project commemorates The Met's Islamic art collection, supports the Museum, and endeavors to preserve traditional craftsmanship.
