Holly Berry Pin
Our gleaming holly pin brings to life a lithograph in Autumn Leaves, an album in The Met collection. This image of a holly sprig with bright red berries was produced in 1862 by Louis Prang of Boston, a successful maker of popular printed maps, collectible album cards, and Christmas cards.
Of all the plants that "deck the halls" at Christmas, beautiful holly (Ilex aquifolium) is perhaps the most significant. Used in pagan winter festivals as a symbol of protection and fertility, by medieval times it had become associated with the Christian winter feast.
