Though the artist considered himself an "Independent," he was instrumental in the establishment of Impressionism. He was one of the group's founders and core members, and an organizer of Impressionist exhibitions. Like the Impressionists, Degas sought to capture fleeting moments in the flow of modern life, yet he showed little interest in landscapes; rather, he favored scenes of urban leisure.
