Holiday Cards
Send season's greetings with art holiday cards.
The festive scene on this quilled holiday card reinterprets a hand-colored lithograph illustrating the Common Cardinal Grosbeak. The original comes from The Birds of America from Drawings Made in the United States (1840–44), a book lithographed by John T. Bowen (American, ca. 1801–?1856) and designed after John James Audubon (American. b. Haiti, 1785–1851). Around 1820, Audubon made it his mission to paint every bird in North America. He subsequently created 435 preparatory watercolors for what would become The Birds of America, a lavish book originally printed between 1827 and 1838. He then published 500 smaller hand-colored lithographs based on his designs between 1840 and 1844.
