The Velvet Touch: Stubbs & Wootton Slippers Come to The Met

We’re putting our best foot forward this fall thanks to our special-edition capule  with Stubbs & Wootton, the much-loved luxury shoe brand. Inspired by masterpieces in The Met collection, the new line of embroidered velvet slippers for both men and women features original illustrations by British artist and interior designer Luke Edward Hall.

Luxe Velvet Slippers

The eight eye-catching styles in this exclusive capsule showcase works of art in The Met collection spanning millennia of human creativity, including marble Cycladic figures dating back as far as 4500 B.C., a terracotta Panathenaic prize amphora ca. 530 B.C., an early 15th-century Chinese jar with a dragon motif, a 16th-century portrait engraving of Queen Elizabeth I, and 19th-century works by Katsushika Hokusai and Vincent van Gogh.

Meticulously handcrafted in Spain, each black Sea Island cotton-velvet slipper is trimmed with black grosgrain and has a leather sole and a stacked wooden heel. The shoes are also sumptuously lined with leather to provide additional support and comfort.

About Stubbs & Wootton

Founded in 1993 by former New York financial advisor Percy Steinhart, Stubbs & Wootton reinvented the velvet evening slipper, once a quaint relic of the "Downton Abbey age," elevating it to a marker of cool elegance. The Palm Beach–based company’s name nods to the 18th-century English sporting and wildlife painters George Stubbs and John Wootton, both of whom are represented in The Met collection.

Meet the Artist

Luke Edward Hall’s philosophy is shaped by his love of storytelling and fantasy. His colorful work is often inspired by history, filtered through a lens of irreverent romanticism. Since founding his studio in 2015, Hall has worked on a broad range of commissions, from interior design and fashion projects to murals and illustration work for books, restaurants, and hotels.
