To coincide with The Costume Institute’s spring 2023 exhibition, Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, The Met Store is pleased to present a collection of stylish apparel and accessories inspired by the inimitable Karl Lagerfeld (French, b. Germany, 1933–2019).
Lagerfeld’s fluid lines united his diverse and innovative designs for some of the world’s premier fashion houses, including his own eponymous label. The Museum’s highly anticipated visual showcase traces the recurring aesthetic themes defining Lagerfeld’s fashions from the 1950s up until his final collection in 2019, and illuminates his complex and creative process, which yielded a body of work unparalleled in the history of fashion.
Visit us in person for a photo op with Karl! And while you're here, you can shop the Karl Lagerfeld designs now available at The Met Fifth Avenue and The Met Store online. Preview some of the collection's highlights below.
Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty Exhibition Catalogue
This investigation into Lagerfeld's artistry explores his extraordinary 65-year career, from the designs for Chloé and Fendi in the 1960s and 1970s to his celebrated leadership in the 1980s and beyond at Chanel and his own label. Inspired by the "line of beauty" theorized by 18th-century English painter William Hogarth, this dazzling publication by Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute, pursues the straight and serpentine "lines" and their intersections in Lagerfeld's work as a means of understanding his unique creative process.
